As the parent of a 6-12 year old child, are you concerned about possible:

South Coast Tutoring provides a learning instructional program for elementary and junior high school children, based on the Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes®.  The purpose is for intensive reading and language acquisition on an individual basis.

My services are also focused on the homeschooling and home-centered learning community.  I've worked with many who do home education or parent-led education to assist in reading tutoring for their grade school age children.  If you are a parent who provides home-based education or participate in a homeschool community of other family-led educators, my tutoring services may be of interest to you.  I am also available to provide seminars and workshops on reading tutoring, reading assessment, learning problems, or reading literacy to Orange County and Southern California parents who home school their children.

Common elements of either program include:
 

Academic evaluation to determine your child's strengths and areas of need.

Follow up consultation of an individualized tutoring plan based on academic assessments.

Intermittent informal assessments to indicate present levels of performance.

Post-academic assessments to show areas of growth and possible continued areas of need.

Post-consultation to determine follow-up tutoring sessions, if needed.

How the program works

By phone, and during the initial consultation appointment, we'll determine together whether my services could benefit your child. I'll first inquire about their school performance, cognitive abilities, learning styles, and behavioral patterns. I'll answer questions you have about my qualifications and the various Lindamood-Bell programs I offer in tutoring, language acquisition, reading comprehension, and writing instruction. If we agree that my services could benefit your child, I'll schedule a time to meet with you and your child for the initial consultation and testing. I prefer to do this at either your home or the child's school. As the first step in the program, I like to structure the initial consultation as a way for your child and I to get to know each other better. I've found that the rapport I develop during this initial meeting is critical to them trusting me and for their growth and learning during the program. I'll also give you a formal overview of the program we've decided on and a proposed tutoring instructional plan.  If we decide to move forward, we'll decide on the dates and times that work best for our respective schedules.

The Lindamood-Bell ™ Program

My current work with learning-challenged elementary school children required that I learn more about the Lindamood-Bell program. During four years of working with the material, I've been very pleased with children's results during a typical 2 month treatment plan. The Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes ® assist students in becoming proficient learners. The instruction is based on improving a student's ability in phonemic awareness and visual imagery within the language processing areas. The specific focus is on developing the sensory-cognitive processes that underlie reading, spelling, language comprehension, math, and visual motor skills. It is common for individuals to gain several grade levels in decoding ability in four to six weeks of intensive treatment. South Coast Tutoring is not licensed, monitored, or sponsored by Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, Inc.®, Nanci Bell, Phyllis Lindamood, or Pat Lindamood.

About me

I'm a veteran of 30 years teaching at the elementary level in the general and special education classrooms, in both the Irvine Unified and Santa Ana School districts. I also have experience in the private school and home school settings. I have my Master's in Reading/Education from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor's from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and have certifications for learning handicapped and learning resource specialties. From 1995-97, I was the educational implementer at U.C. Irvine's Child Developmental Center's federally-funded clinical research program on ADD/ADHD. Currently, I am a Resource Specialist in Santa Ana School District working with learning disabled students and in the general education classroom.
